A Comic Operetta by Gilbert & Sullivan
**NEWS** The Mikado will be presented for an extended 3-week run!
or The Town of Titipu
This opera opened March 14, 1885 at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 672 performances, more than any other G&S opera.
Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor, becomes the Lord High Executioner for Titipu, while Pooh-Bah is Lord High Everything Else. Nanki-Poo, the Mikado's son, wants to marry Yum-Yum, Ko-Ko's ward. The situation gets complicated when Ko-Ko executes Nanki-Poo.
This is the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and arguably the most popular opera ever written.
It has delighted audiences for more than a century, and generated a number of imitations. But none were nearly as good as the original, which represented both Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their creative geniuses.
ROLES
The Mikado: (M - Bass/Baritone) The emperor of Japan, whose governing philosophy is “let the punishment fit the crime.”
Nanki-Poo: (M - Tenor) Romantic lead. The son of the Mikado, who has fled the imperial court and comes to Titipu disguised as a wandering minstrel. In love with Yum-Yum.
Ko-Ko: (M - Comic Baritone) Lord High Executioner of the town of Titipu, guardian of (and in love with) the lovely young Yum-Yum.
Pooh-Bah: (M - Baritone) Titipu’s Lord High Everything Else, an extremely haughty and exclusive person.
Pish-Tush: (M - Baritone) A Noble Lord.
Yum-Yum: (F - Soprano) Ko-Ko’s ward, also engaged to Ko-Ko, lovely, irresistible, and fully aware of her charms. In love with
Nanki-Poo.
Pitti-Sing: (F - Mezzo-soprano) A Ward of Ko-Ko. Yum-Yum’s somewhat bold and irreverent friend.
Peep-Bo: (F - Soprano/mezzo) A Ward of Ko-Ko. Another of Yum-Yum’s friends.
Katisha: (F - Contralto) An elderly lady in love with Nanki-Poo and determined to get him back at any cost.
Chorus of Schoolgirls, Nobles and Townspeople: As with most Gilbert & Sullivan shows, the chorus is a very important part of the action, and has much stage time and wonderful music.
