A Comic (Japanese) Operetta by Gilbert & Sullivan

or The Town of Titipu

This opera opened March 14, 1885 at the Savoy Theatre and ran for 672 performances, more than any other G&S opera.

Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor, becomes the Lord High Executioner for Titipu, while Pooh-Bah is Lord High Everything Else. Nanki-Poo, the Mikado's son, wants to marry Yum-Yum, Ko-Ko's ward. The situation gets complicated when Ko-Ko executes Nanki-Poo.

This is the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan opera, and arguably the most popular opera ever written.

It has delighted audiences for more than a century, and generated a number of imitations. But none were nearly as good as the original, which represented both Gilbert and Sullivan at the height of their creative geniuses.
