A murder mystery by Otis Bigelow
The play is set in 1908. Having made the mistake of marrying for love, Clarke and Cora Mariner are
reminded upon renewed acquaintance with their former sweethearts, of all the riches their foolishness has denied
them, and the simultaneous thought occurs to them that perhaps it's not too late to try again. But, as divorce
is unthinkable in their circle, murder appears to be the only answer, whereupon they try to do away with each
other— their diabolical plans goes awry to the extent of nine unintended victims. Suffice it to say that the
police are as inept as the murderers, and all ends in as stylishly—and as charmingly bizarre—a fashion as it
began.
This cast will require 14 actors age 18 to 60 years. A note about ages: not a hard fast rule. We are looking for interesting
character potential rather than "the right age" so all "over 18" are welcome.
Louise Fox: (F) (18-21) Young imaginative, romantic.
James: (M) (18-25) Footman. Kind of Thuggish, not very nice.
Henry: (M) (18-25) Footman. Comic reaction to uncomfortable situations.
Edward Leslie: (M) (18-25), Earl of Baggersly's temporary (not from England) assistant. Classic romantic hero type.
Millicent Foxxe-Firestone: (F) (40-50) The Hostess. Imperious, acerbic. Loathes being inconvenienced.
Charles Foxxe-Firestone: (M) (50+) Character has no dialogue - needed is someone who can convey a demand or emotion with a look.
Harriet Ramphere: (F) (40+) Assistant to Miss Gumpert. Matronly, warm friendly, suffers mightily. Physical comic.
Styles (M) The Classic Ancient Butler but will become:
Lieutenant Sergeant (M) (30+) Hot head, jumps to conclusions, "shouts a lot".
Humbolt (M) (30+) Earl of Baggersly (English) Vague sort of Prince Charles type. Verbal comic timing needed.
Aristede Noirot: (M) (30+) Dramatic, self centred, classic send up of Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot (but does not have to look like the TV character!)
Clarke Marriner: (M) (30+) Friendly Joe average fellow. But don't let that fool you.
Mr Fisby: (F) (30+) suspicious reserved assistant to Miss Gumpert.
Cora Marriner: (F) (30+) Friendly Joan Average lady. But don't let that fool you either.
Carlotta Gumpert: (F) (30+) Rich, with no taste. dragon lady. Lot's of fun.
