Friday May 1st, would have marked the opening of the final show of Morpheus Theatre’s Silver Anniversary season, and our fifth production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance.  This time, under the direction of Paige Fossheim and Musical Direction of Stefanie Barnfather, we have a gender swapped cast with The Pirate Queen, Frederique, Able, and a Matronly Major-General.  Working in isolation the cast members have prepared a mash up of some of your favorite songs to enjoy until we can raise the curtain on this most beloved of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

For now, our production of The Pirates of Penzance remains on hold, postponed until we can get back to the theatre.  All tickets that have already been purchased will be automatically transferred to the new show dates, whatever those dates may be.  At that time you will have the opportunity to adjust your performance dates to suit your availability.  In addition, all Flex Passes will be extended until the end of next Season (June 2021).  We thank you for your patience and continued support.

We would also like to invite all of our friends, patrons and volunteers to join us as we launch our Silver Anniversary donation campaign which has a target of raising $5000 between now and the end of June.  Whether you can contribute 25, 50 or even 100 dollars, every contribution will help as we wait to raise the curtain again.

Thank you,
Morpheus Theatre

Morpheus Theatre’s Response to Covid-19

Posted Mar 16, 2020

As I am sure each one of you has been doing, I have been closely following the news over the last few weeks, and especially the rapidly changing environment over the last few days. The current restrictions from Alberta Health Services, and the local state of emergency declared by the City of Calgary, requires Morpheus to take active steps to protect our patrons, volunteers, artists, participants, and staff.

Effective immediately, Morpheus Theatre will be suspending our season until it is safe and prudent to resume. Performances of The Pirates of Penzance will be postponed to a future date TBD. This is our 25th Season finale and the show will go on.

While our production was still over 6 weeks away, this pandemic impacts all of us on a daily basis. Morpheus Theatre wanted to ensure that we followed the recommendations of the province and city by limiting personal contact, not just at a performance, but also at rehearsal. Due to the size of the cast and crew, and the nature of theatre, we could not support social distancing and requests for individuals to stay at home, while continuing to hold rehearsals.

In addition, this affects our other programs as follows:
– Classes for the G&S Juniors will be suspended, and will resume later in the year. The plan is for the G&S juniors to still perform the year end performance.
– Classes for Voices in our Head will be suspended.
– Our Design Workshop scheduled for this weekend will be postponed until a date later in the season.
– With the Pumphouse Theatre temporarily closing the facility through March 31st, the One-Act Play Festival and our production of The Shift by Kurt Archer has been postponed.

When the time comes to move forward with the production and rehearsal process, we will be in contact with all of our volunteers, artists, and patrons.
