Contract Opportunity
Music Director / Educator – G&S Junior Theatre School

Morpheus Theatre is seeking a music director/educator for its G&S Junior Theatre School program. This is a contract position beginning mid-October 2016 until mid-May 2017 (approximately 50 to 60 hours of classroom time). The remuneration for this contract is set at $2000.

The G&S Junior Theatre School works with youth age 9 to 17 to produce a Gilbert and Sullivan production each May at The Pumphouse Theatre, on the set of the Morpheus Theatre mainstage production.

The program began five years ago and since it’s inception has doubled in size–building a strong community of young artists while fostering a love for the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Working within the spirit of community theatre, the program is inclusive and works to develop the skills of young artists in a safe, fun and inspiring environment.

The program has two classes running concurrently Saturday mornings from 10am to 11:30am (October to January) and 10am to 12pm (February to May). Two dress rehearsal and two performances will take place during the first two weeks of May.

The successful candidate will have:

  • a strong love of musical education
  • a passion for inspiring young artists to work towards their performance potential
  • an appreciation of Gilbert and Sullivan
  • experience working with and supervising youth
  • ability to play the piano and accompany singers
  • a current police information check/vulnerable sector search for employment

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Theatre School Coordinator/Acting Director to develop the course plan for the season
  • Facilitate weekly classes based on the plan
  • Work with the Theatre School Coordinator/Acting Director to deliver upon the vision for the show, select and teach the music for the show
  • Create preparatory materials for the students to practice
  • Ensure a safe environment and proper use of vocal techniques for all participants
  • Assist the students in reaching their potential

If you have any questions or are interested in applying please email the Theatre School Coordinator at the address below. Applications should include your resume and a cover letter outlining your experience and your artistic practice. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

G&S JR Theatre School – Registration Deadline SEPT 1st!

Morpheus Theatre is pleased to announce that for our 6th season, our G&S JR Theatre School program will be studying the operetta about fairies & parliament, PRINCESS IDA

In October 2018 we will be continuing to offer both a Junior class for students 9 – 12 and a Senior class for students 13- 17. The program gives youth an opportunity to expand their acting skills and challenge themselves with the lyrics and patter of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. The Senior class will also include more advanced acting skills and choreography.

Classes will include professional instruction in Acting and Voice, and the program will culminate in two youth performances on the set of our mainstage production for their family and friends. They will work on a full set with lights, sounds, and costumes.

Students enrolled in the program gain confidence & aptitude in their singing through learning the basics in choral singing:  tuning, breath management, vowel formation, good diction, posture and facial expression using vocal warm-ups, exercises, and homework.  The basics of musical sight reading will be taught, listening skills will be honed, and singing in harmony will be introduced.  The fun, humour and drama of Gilbert and Sullivan is a great way for youth to be introduced to classical music.  Group vocal lessons encourage teamwork and friendship, in a low stress environment!  All students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at solo singing, if they so wish, and the learning environment created will be positive and constructive.

DATE: Saturday, October 13 to Saturday May 18 10:00 – 11:30am
***No classes over winter break or holiday long weekends.

COST: Juniors – $375, Seniors – $425  (SENIORS ARE SOLD OUT)

September 23rd to October 1st, 2016
By Ray Cooney
Directed by James Noonan

John Smith is a man with a schedule and a secret. The schedule is not just to keep him on time in his job driving a taxi, it also keeps his life—his lives, rather—organized and in their places. You see, it’s important to be organized when one has two of everything. Yes, everything. Two separate lives in two different houses in two different areas of London, with two different wives! When John is mugged, he finds himself coming home from the hospital surrounded by wives and policemen, all asking for an explanation. Run For Your Wife has been bringing laughter to audiences for many years. Join us this September when it brings the laughter to you!

December 2nd to 17th, 2016
By Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, and Frank Capra
Directed by Jamie Eastgaard-Ross

Based on the classic film by Frank Capra, It’s A Wonderful Life has been delighting audiences on the silver screen and in theatres since it debuted in 1943. December just doesn’t seem complete without a trip to Bedford Falls and the story of George Bailey, a man who believes in building community and helping your neighbours. When he becomes overwhelmed by one misfortune after another, George almost gives in to despair and then, on Christmas Eve, he meets a special angel on a mission to help George and receive his wings. The timeless message of hope, love and charity is especially warming on winter evenings with family and friends close-by. We hope you and yours will come celebrate this classic piece and this special time with us.

For our Pantomime fans, we will be returning to the genre in 2017.

February 3rd to 18th, 2017
By Norm Foster
Directed by Alice Nelson

What do you do when all the money is gone? When there’s no jobs in sight, the family home still isn’t paid off and the bills just keep coming, how can one survive in a society that requires capital? When Rollie and Daphne Waters are faced with just such a situation, they decide it is time to get creative…and a little risqué. Okay, a lot risqué. But it would be fairly easy, after all, their friend Alex has a camera, he’s a professional cameraman and he just lost his job too! Daphne is a writer, Rollie can get the costumes…it’s a cash cow! And besides, it’s not like the designer dress can be returned, so what choice do they have, really? It could be romantic, really—a young love story, with Italian bakeries and nine grain baguettes! Come enjoy a laugh with us in these troubling economic times, it’s in the stars!

In honour of Canada’s 150th year, we are presenting this comedy by renowned Canadian playwright Norm Foster.

April 28th to May 13th, 2017
By W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
Directed by Kelly Reay

Love. So beautiful. So musical. So complicated. Although forbidden by fairy law, Iolanthe marries a mortal and is then banished from fairyland. Here in our human world, she bears a son; a lovely lad named Strephon, who falls head over heels and wants to marry Phyllis, who is, of course, desired by all the members of the House of Peers. When Phyllis sees Strephon embrace Iolanthe, who is ethereal and lovely, she doesn’t stop for one moment to consider she might be Strephon’s mother and sets in motion a musical clash between politicians and fairies, sending everyone tripping hither, tripping thither – we did mention love can be complicated – it’s an energetic, satirical journey to the finale. Off and away to get your tickets! We’ll see you in Spring for this, the seventh of fourteen collaborations by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

Jumpin’ June Bugs! Summer is a Swarm of Activity!

There’s an inside joke at Morpheus that we’ll get all our extra things done in the summer “when it’s not busy”.  Or people ask me aren’t I glad that I can relax now that we are in the theatre “off-season”?  To which I, the Operations Manager, usually fly off the handle and reply with a litany of things going on in the Summer months when it’s “not busy”.

Check out what’s going on first in our “off-season”
