Ready to hit the ground running? September means Theatre Madness!

September is nearly here, and that means that the theatre season is finally back in full swing!  (Just don’t tell that to our Run For Your Wife cast & crew, who have been working their buns off for a full month already…)

We would like to congratulate all recipients & nominees of this year’s Cat Awards! The community came out to celebrate in golden style the dedication and passion of all community theatre volunteers on August 27 at the Rozsa Centre. Morpheus was pleased to present Volunteer Awards to Jody Low and Meredith Anderson for their exceptional contributions to our company for this past year. Also, special Congratulations goes to Troy Couillard, James Noonan, the cast of Dinner Party, Mike & Caren Johnson and the production of Death of a Salesman who all received awards in their categories! G&S JR Theatre School – Registration Deadline SEPT 1st!

PROFESSIONAL THEATRE TRAINING FOR YOUTH AGED 9 TO 17!

Morpheus Theatre is pleased to announce that for our 6th season, our G&S JR Theatre School program will be studying the operetta about fairies & parliament, PRINCESS IDA

In October 2018 we will be continuing to offer both a Junior class for students 9 – 12 and a Senior class for students 13- 17. The program gives youth an opportunity to expand their acting skills and challenge themselves with the lyrics and patter of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. The Senior class will also include more advanced acting skills and choreography.

Classes will include professional instruction in Acting and Voice, and the program will culminate in two youth performances on the set of our mainstage production for their family and friends. They will work on a full set with lights, sounds, and costumes.

Students enrolled in the program gain confidence & aptitude in their singing through learning the basics in choral singing:  tuning, breath management, vowel formation, good diction, posture and facial expression using vocal warm-ups, exercises, and homework.  The basics of musical sight reading will be taught, listening skills will be honed, and singing in harmony will be introduced.  The fun, humour and drama of Gilbert and Sullivan is a great way for youth to be introduced to classical music.  Group vocal lessons encourage teamwork and friendship, in a low stress environment!  All students will also have the opportunity to try their hand at solo singing, if they so wish, and the learning environment created will be positive and constructive.

DATE: Saturday, October 13 to Saturday May 18 10:00 – 11:30am
***No classes over winter break or holiday long weekends.

COST: Juniors – $375, Seniors – $425  (SENIORS ARE SOLD OUT)

Jumpin’ June Bugs! Summer is a Swarm of Activity!

There’s an inside joke at Morpheus that we’ll get all our extra things done in the summer “when it’s not busy”.  Or people ask me aren’t I glad that I can relax now that we are in the theatre “off-season”?  To which I, the Operations Manager, usually fly off the handle and reply with a litany of things going on in the Summer months when it’s “not busy”.

Check out what’s going on first in our “off-season”

June 4 – Directing Workshop: From good to Great with Simon Mallett

June 13, 14, 15 – AUDITIONS for Run for your Wife (more information coming soon!)

June 18 – Technique for Stage Speech Workshop with Jane MacFarlane

Workshop: Stage Movement: Physical Techniques for Telling the Story
with Alice Nelson

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words… What’s your picture saying?

SYNOPSIS:
For Actors & Directors! Maximize the story that your body can tell by maximizing your control, connection and understanding of “physical stories”. Stage Movement classes give actors the ability to make holistic character choices, give the director options, and gain control over physical habits that detract from your performance. Directors can get a better understanding of how to balance the stage, use space for status, and use blocking correctly.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

She holds an MFA in Ensemble Based Physical Theatre from Dell’Arte Physical Theatre School in California. She has written and toured solo shows and co-created productions regarding social and political issues.
