How to Handle Heightened Text with Iam Coulter

Do you feel lost with Shakespeare? Is your classical monologue causing you grief? Are Gilbert’s words feeling forced?
SYNOPSIS:
Iam will lead this class through how to find your comfort-zone with “Heightened Text” (anything from Shakespeare and other classical pieces, to modern, stylized works). Our emphasis will be on how to make formal or unusual text your own, and finding connection with it personally.
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Iam Coulter is a passionate teaching artist and Shakespeare enthusiast. She currently serves as the director of education, development and outreach for Quest Theatre, and was formerly the artistic producer of The Shakespeare Company in Calgary, Alberta. She is an actor, director, dance machine and clown. She teaches acting, voice and text and Shakespeare performance to a variety of students. Iam holds a BFA (Drama) from the University of Calgary and completed the conservatory program at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts where she returns as often as possible to continue her training. Iam has worked with Citadel Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Mystery Theatre, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Junction and The Shakespeare Company. Workshop participants should come prepared with a piece of heightened text that they would like to work with. It doesn’t need to be long. 6-15 lines. It can be Shakespeare, poetry, anything classical. Even lyrics from a favourite song! Learn it by heart (memorize) prior to the workshop. The speech should not be from a non-human character but age & gender DO NOT need to match your own. What’s important is that you feel a personal connection to the piece, even if you can’t quite articulate what that connection is.

SYNOPSIS:
Under the guidance of Kim Mattice-Wanat, we will be exploring projection, speech song, singing as a learnable skill, singing anxiety, choosing and preparing appropriate songs for auditions and more! Learn how to transfer your acting skills to singing!
INSTRUCTOR BIO:
Kim Mattice Wanat holds a Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Alberta with a major in drama and an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is a performer, teacher and director. Her professional credits include lead roles in The Fantasticks, Oliver, South Pacific, and Passion. For 10 years she performed as a freelance artist in touring productions across Canada; Backstage Broadway, a touring production of “Broadway Musicals Through the Decades” and WIND, WOMEN & SONG, a female quartet – 2 sop, 1 piano and french horn, which performed classical music. In 2000, this quartet released a CD entitled La Dolce Vita.
Ms. Mattice Wanat is well known as a voice teacher, adjudicator and pedagogue clinician conducting workshops for teachers and choral directors across Western Canada. In 2005 she published a book for teachers entitled “Unleashing the Expressive Resonant Voice.” For the past 26 years she has taught voice to the professional acting students in the Drama Dept. at U of Alberta, and has acted as voice coach and musical director for several of the Bachelor of Fine Arts productions.
In 1999, Ms. Mattice Wanat founded Opera NUOVA. She has directed several of the NUOVA mainstage productions including: Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Aaron Copland’s The Tenderland, Mark Adamo’s Little Women, Offenbach’s La Perichole, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte; Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. Throughout the year she acts as artistic director for the school touring performances which have included; Menotti’s Amahl and The Night Visitors and Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Dean Burry’s The Brother’s Grimm and Isis and The Seven Scorpions, a commissioned work by NUOVA Alumnus Isaiah Bell entitled The Lives of Lesser Things, and Ramona Luengen’s Naomi’s Road, based on Joy Kogawa’s novel of the same name. Ms. Mattice Wanat most recently co-directed with Brian Dooley and L’Uni Theatre La Voix Humaine (February 2016) and looks forward to directing NUOVA’s production of Parade (June 2016) as part of the 2016 NUOVA Opera and Music Theatre Festival.

Recruiting new volunteer FOH managers to join our FOH team!
We are recruiting new FOH managers to join our FOH team for our shows throughout 2016. Typical commitment is 2 to 3 performances per production (with the option to opt out if necessary of course!) We will be providing training on Jan 9 or 10 depending on availability, along with refreshers before each show!
Our new volunteers will get their feet wet with our upcoming production, The Dinner Party, Jan 22 – Feb 7, 2016, in the Joyce Doolittle Theatre at the Pumphouse Theatre.
The Front of House Manager takes the lead in the box office selling tickets and works with the Stage Manager to make sure the evening runs smoothly. The Front of House manager needs to remain in the lobby for the duration of the show. Of course, you also receive 2 complimentary tickets for volunteering.
We are also looking for Lead Ushers to help organize and train ushers on the performance days.

General Tasks:

Prepare cheques
Prepare deposits
Prepare Payroll & Payroll remittance cheque
Filing of paperwork
Bank reconciliations
Credit card reconciliations
Facility expense invoice reconciliation
Help prepare AGLC reports (as required)
Enter external accountant year-end journal entries (if any)
Time Requirements:
Sept to May: weekly approximately 2-4hrs per week
Summer: biweekly, approximately 4hrs per week, plus Year-end activities as required

You know the story: the beautiful princess is cursed by an evil fairy to prick her finger on a spindle on her 18th birthday and die. Nothing says “welcome to the world” like the well wishes of a wicked spell caster who wasn’t invited to the party. You know the characters: the Princess Aurora and her royal parents, the good fairies, the evil fairy and her cat Spindleshanks and of course, the dashing Prince who saves them all from their perpetual slumber. But this isn’t your ordinary slumber party, this is Pantomime! Oh yes it is! And you know what that means – flip flop boys with girls and girls with boys – and is that a Queen or a Dame? It’s both! It’s all topsy turvy fun and games but some things ring true always and it’s true love’s kiss that will save the day this December. We hope you’ll take a break from the hustle and bustle and join us and the zombies for this family friendly holiday tradition.

Morpheus Theatre is seeking experienced and passionate directors for our 2016/2017 season!
We present 4 quality shows each year (a farce or comedy, a Christmas family production, a contemporary drama, and a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta) at the Pumphouse Theatre, in both the Victor Mitchell & Joyce Doolittle Theatres.
Applicants are asked to submit a letter of interest and a resume with related theatre experience/background to info@morpheustheatre.ca. Applicants do not need to submit for a specific show.
